The Building  the Movement Working Group

What We Do:

Building the Movement working group helps SURJ build power through organizing and mobilizing our members.  From outreach to education to relationship building, we grow our movement and get to know our people so that we unleash their power!

We meet the 4th MondayTuesday of each month from 7:00-8:30 pm at Urban Sanctuary in downtown San Jose (80 S 5th St). Meeting attendance is not required to be a part of this team!  There are so many ways to participate beyond the planning we do in our meetings.

This group uses a number of different strategies to build our movement. For example:

  • Direct outreach through tabling and doorknocking

  • Strengthening our relationships through one-to-one conversations and community building activities

  • Onboarding new members and orientation

  • Strengthening the network of allies through outreach and relationship building with faith communities in Santa Clara County

  • Community outreach through educational events and presentations.

Want an example of how we Build the Movement?

At the March 28th No Kings Protest, 20 dedicated SURJ organizers hit the ground running across Mountain View, Sunnyvale, San Jose, and Santa Cruz. Engaging directly with our neighbors, we sparked over 150 meaningful community connections and turned conversations into concrete action.

Our Impact at No Kings 3/28 at a Glance:

  • Empowering Neighbors: Distributed vital Rapid Response Network Hotline and Know Your Rights cards to strengthen community defense.

  • Driving Political Change: Collected signatures for the Voters Against Billions to Israel commitment.

  • Growing the Movement: Successfully signed up 35 new volunteers to be trained as Rapid Response Network Legal Observers.
