What does “school” mean to you, especially in the COVID age? Opportunity? Inequality? Hypocrisy? Discovery? Spend some time in the sandbox of the mind reimaging words and images to confront the stories we were told, and uplift the stories that were ignored. Tear apart old text books/syllabi/”news”papers, or create your own collaged vision of What We Should Have Learned In School. End up with a collage postcard, letter or poster reminding yourself and others that there is more than one way to see the histories that bind us. Will include discussion of upcoming ballot Prop 15: Schools and Communities First and how to support it!
To prepare:
If you have old text/history books you want to demolish, this is a great way to do it! Bring ‘em to the table.
Or, think of a person or story you learned outside school which should have been “required reading”. Source images, quotes, and meaningful references to play with.
Or, let yourself follow the muse and bring any magazine, book, mailer, catalog you have to flip through and be inspired. The status quo is everywhere – you’ll have plenty of material to rip/shred/question!
Also bring:
paper (grocery bags or printer paper is great!)
scissors or xacto knife
tape and/or glue/gluesticks
googly eyes/feathers/sequence or other fun stuff. Why not?!
index cards, old wrapping paper or stationary, children's drawings, doodles, etc
crayons, markers, or colored pencils
Collage is an especially welcoming medium for the artistically shy or intimidated. Everyone can rip paper and use paste! :) Think like an organizer and invite something you think is ripe for what SURJ has to offer! :)
