The county executive’s budget proposal for Santa Clara County 2022-2023 includes $689,000,000 for something called a “Secure Treatment Center.” This is neither the maximum security jail nor the noncarceral mental health facility run by Behavioral Health that Supervisors Wasserman, Simitian and Lee voted for on January 25th, and it is also significantly more expensive than the $390 million the county was originally planning to spend. Read Silicon Valley De-Bug’s full letter to the county supervisors for more context. A capital project like this will be discussed at the Monday May 16th budget workshop as part of the Finance and Government Operations Committee budget. We don’t know exactly when public comment on Agenda Item 5 will begin, and the agenda mentions that the budget workshop will continue into the evening if necessary. We just know that the meeting begins at 1:30pm.
