Tonight we head to City Hall to tell SJ City Council to fund TRUST expansion before they vote on the budget tomorrow. Please try to arrive at City Hall by 5:30pm because there will be a long line to get through security. Wear your SURJ t-shirt if you have one and pick up one of our signs. If you would like to join us for food and solidarity starting at 4pm, email jenm@sacredheartcs.org for details. For more information, check out this document. Please also call and email your councilmembers today. We do not know if we have the 6 votes we need to win, which is why YOUR voice matters.
Tonight is a special meeting specifically for hearing from the public about the budget. It has only two items--the public hearing (our item is 3.1) and the stormwater permit item (see this reporting and op-ed). Tomorrow Tuesday at their regular meeting is when they actually VOTE on the budget. There will be very limited public comment on Tuesday, and no one who spoke on Monday night will be allowed to speak again. That is why we are turning out full force tonight. However, if you can come on Tuesday afternoon just to carry signs, it will be good to have some of us there to show we are watching (please let me know if you can make it). ;) What that means though is that we will get no closure tonight--just a chance to make our voices heard.
The simplest version of our ask for SJ City Council tonight:
Item 3.1: Support the Kamei/Ortiz/Candelas/Jimenez memo and take the next step to fund a 24/7 team. TRUST is public safety for all.
