Writing down what we feel is one of the most powerful ways we have of figuring out where we stand. But sometimes the thing we're working through feels too big, or too loaded, to write about. White supremacy is one of those topics that often traps us, when we try to articulate it. Writing through our thoughts on race in America is a useful skill: whether on Facebook or in longer formats, being able to articulate the workings of white supremacy is one way we can use our voices for good. Come spend an evening working this muscle, learning to use humor, humility and practice to discover how we can "Write Through Whiteness."
This workshop will be facilitated by SURJ's own Lauren Shields. She is the Minister of Urban Outreach at Urban Sanctuary in San Jose, CA. She lives in San Jose with her husband and published her first book, The Beauty Suit: How My Year of Religious Modesty Made Me a Better Feminist, with Beacon Press, in 2018. In her spare time she performs with the AIT Players at American Improv Theater. This workshop is part of SURJ's Cover Charge for Justice, a fundraising series of creative skills building workshops. Cover charge is from $5 to infinity ;) but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Bring friends! Cover Charge for Justice is a great way to introduce someone new to SURJ.
